Tesla now No. 2 U.S. car maker by market value
A record run for Tesla Inc. shares Monday tipped the electric-car maker to surpass Ford Motor Co. in market capitalization and become the No. 2 car company in the U.S.
Tesla TSLA, +7.27% stock rose 7.3% to close at a record $298.52. The shares traded as high as $299, establishing a new intraday record as well. The stock was the best-performing on the Nasdaq-100.
The upward march for the stock put Tesla’s market cap around $48.7 billion vs. Ford’s F, -1.72% $44.6 billion. General Motors Co. GM, -3.37% is the largest U.S. car maker by market capitalization, which around $51.2 billion.
The surge came after Tesla on Sunday reported preliminary first-quarter deliveries that came in on the higher end of analysts’ expectations, which the market took as a sign the company is on track to launch the Model 3, the company’s mass-market sedan, later this year as expected.
“Smoothness with legacy vehicles will likely allow more focus on a successful launch of the critical Model 3 vehicle later this year,” said Efraim Levy, an analyst with CFRA, in a note. Tesla stock’s “rich valuation” is a concern, he said.

Model X deliveries were up 22% from fourth-quarter numbers, demonstrating that Tesla “has fixed many issues related to manufacturing,” analysts at Baird said in a note.

Tesla’s year over year increase from 15,000 deliveries in Q1 2016 to 25,000 in Q1 2017 represents an almost 70% increase and the kind of numbers analysts expect to see if the company is going to ramp up to Model 3 production.
There are likely going to be some market shifts over the current quarters. For example, Hong Kong, which was good for over 1,000 sales per quarter, will likely drop with the current EV incentives being significantly reduced.
On the other hand, new markets for Tesla, like New Zealand and Taiwan, just started to get their first deliveries and others, like South Korea and the United Arab Emirates, are expected to start receiving their first shipment in the coming months.
Those markets will receive both the Model S and X at the same time, which is relatively new for Tesla’s market expansions.
